FirstCare Medical Center was established in August 1999 as a Primary Care and
Cardiology Practice, committed to providing comprehensive, compassionate and
effective health care for our patients.
Our practice is built with emphasis on prevention and early detection of
diseases.
We treat all patients aged 10years and above.
It is the goal of our physicians, nurses and entire staff to care for all
members of your family in a very compassionate way.
Our Story
It is said that out of the ashes rose the Phoenix and so it was with the
vision of our dream of creating FirstCare.----Mine stemmed from the darkest,
most depressing day of my life as a patient. Dr. Emmanuel’s stemmed from one of
his most disheartening days as a physician.
As a third year medical student, I not only had the misfortune to have the
worse tooth ache of my life, but I also had the even greater misfortune to have
it happen at a time when the only option for care was the University School of
Dentistry Emergency room. Not only did I have to wait for hours while enduring
the most excruciating pain, but I also was later to be misdiagnosed as well as
mistreated.
As my turn with the dentist was announced, I was told rudely to open my mouth
and point to the tooth. There were no efforts at all to listen to my history,
discuss with me my diagnosis, or explain the anticipated plan of care.---I was
treated like a thing,----an object. The only indication of a plan of care that I
was given was to have my head jerked back and held in a vice grip as I struggled
to tell the Dentist that I could still feel everything despite his Lidocaine.
The only discussion of my diagnosis that he chose to give was a loud shout of
“You don’t know what you’re talking about---you can’t possibility feel this.”
Needless to say that I was not surprised when I was later told by my regular
dentist that my case had been totally mismanaged as well as misdiagnosed.
However, it was from the bitter ashes of that experience that the seeds of my
vision for FirstCare were born.---I decided then and there that when I became a
doctor, there would never be a patient under my care who was disrespected or
ignored. Not only would I listen to my patients’ complaints, but I would
completely discuss diagnoses and plan of care.
Dr Emmanuel’s dark tale occurred during his first year of medical residency
training. It was at this time that he met and cared for a forty-one year old
patient who was a pivotal point in his career and who served as the framework
for the seeds of his vision for FirstCare. He had never seen a sicker patient
with a heart attack or a younger one. He read every article available regarding
her condition and followed every protocol. However, despite the tireless efforts
of himself and his team, her life slipped away. It was later discovered from her
family that she did not take her medicines. No one had ever taken the time to
explain their importance to her—She too had been treated like a thing; an
object.-- Someone had simply handed her a bunch of what looked like horse pills
with no explanation as to when or how or why she should take them and no
indication that they cared whether she did or not. He was struck by the fact
that the tragedy was not only that such a young woman had died, but also that
her death could have been prevented if she only truly understood how important
it was to take her medications. From the ashes of his sadness came the
glimmering seeds of his vision for FirstCare. From that day forward, he vowed to
build a practice that would champion quality, compassionate care as well as to
provide explanations which could help patients understand their ailments. With
the hope that this enlightenment would make a difference in the community one
patient at a time.
The nightmarish lessons learned from our combined tragic experiences gave us
both
a commitment to walk our talk everyday. We both believe strongly that good
communication and good medicine go hand in hand.
A testament to our values and dedication are comments we hear from some of
our patients. A woman who required heart bypass surgery had previously been told
that her symptoms were in her head. She told us “I really appreciate you
listening to me…you saved me.” Another patient was quoted as saying, “God didn’t
make any perfect people, but he came close when he created Dr. Renee”.
Both of these patients are doing well today because of the thorough and
diligent testing and diagnosis by the doctors and staff at FirstCare Medical
Center. Our staff works with the passion to do what they are effectively trained
to do and what they genuinely believe in.
Whether you are a patient of Dr. Renee or Emmanuel Obi, or our other caring
physicians, you will be treated with genuine care to both your physical and
emotional needs. You will also be given the time you need to fully understand
and ask your questions each time, every time.
We hope that you will share our vision of FirstCare Medical Center --- as
Happy Valley Clinic –A place where the sun smiles all day. Everything in Happy
Valley is pretty and green and…happy. The people who work there and go there for
care are happy, too.
